Has Wikipedia lost it’s wiki?

Alright the time has come for me to ask?

What is going on with Wikipedia? I know there has been much talk in the blogosphere about the amazing occurence of them showing up in Google’s top results but there is something else that disturbs me. Who is messing with or editing out the legitimate external link contributions?

For example, in the spirit of wiki-dom I decided to share what I thought to be a very good external link on a wikipedia page. I even went as far as too submit it to the Wikipedia help-desk to gain their approval. They thanked me for asking before I submitted the link and told me that they too thought it would be a genuine addition to the page in question.

I noticed that my link was on there for a couple of weeks and then I stopped keeping track. About a month later I went back to the page and found that not only had the external link I contributed been erased but a ridiculous link was now at the top of the list. “Okay,” I thought to myself. “This ridiculous link must have just been added and the Wikipedia staff has yet to find it.” But as I returned to this page for the following three weeks I found that the ridiculous link was still on top of the external link list. So what’s going on here? Who really is controlling this thing? Has Wikipedia strayed completely from the wiki path? It gives me dim hope for the new site Citizendium.
